Whole-House Audio: Everything You Need to Know About Multi-Room Sound

Bullaugen Team8 May 2025

What Is Whole-House Audio?

Whole-house audio (also called multi-room audio or distributed audio) is a system that delivers high-quality music and sound to multiple rooms in your home — each with independent volume control and source selection. You might play jazz in the living room, Afrobeats in the kitchen, and nature sounds in the bedroom, all simultaneously.

Unlike carrying a Bluetooth speaker from room to room, a whole-house audio system uses permanently installed speakers — typically in the ceiling or walls — connected to a central amplifier or a wireless platform like Sonos. The result is consistent, room-filling sound that's architecturally invisible.

How It Works

There are two main approaches to whole-house audio:

Centralised (Wired): All speakers connect back to a central amplifier rack. Each room is a 'zone' with its own volume control. This approach offers the best sound quality and reliability, and is ideal for new builds or major renovations where wiring can be run during construction.

Distributed (Wireless): Systems like Sonos use Wi-Fi to stream music to wireless speakers placed in each room. No speaker wiring is needed, making this perfect for existing homes. Each speaker is a self-contained unit with its own amplifier.

Many premium installations combine both — wired in-ceiling speakers in the main living areas powered by a Sonos Amp or Crestron amplifier, with portable wireless speakers in bedrooms or guest rooms.

Choosing the Right Speakers

In-Ceiling Speakers

The most popular choice for permanent installations. In-ceiling speakers sit flush with the ceiling, painted to match, and are virtually invisible. They deliver excellent sound coverage from above, filling the room evenly. Look for speakers with pivoting tweeters for directional adjustment.

In-Wall Speakers

Mounted flush in the wall, these work well in rooms where ceiling installation isn't practical, or where you want stereo imaging from the front of the room (like a TV room or home office). They perform similarly to bookshelf speakers but disappear into the architecture.

Outdoor Speakers

Weather-resistant speakers designed for gardens, patios, and pool areas. Available as rock-shaped landscape speakers, bollard speakers, or surface-mount models. Essential for entertaining outdoors in Nigeria's warm climate.

Zone Control: The Magic of Independence

The defining feature of whole-house audio is zone control. Each room — or zone — can play a different source at a different volume, or the entire house can play the same song in perfect sync. Typical zones include:

  • Living room and dining area (often grouped)
  • Kitchen
  • Master bedroom
  • Children's rooms
  • Study or home office
  • Outdoor patio and garden
  • Bathroom (yes, waterproof in-ceiling speakers exist)

Control is typically via a smartphone app, a wall-mounted keypad, or voice commands through Alexa or Google Home. Most systems support streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, and internet radio.

What Does It Cost in Nigeria?

Costs depend on the number of zones, speaker quality, and whether you're wiring a new build or retrofitting an existing home:

  • 2–3 zones (Sonos wireless, portable speakers): ₦400,000 – ₦900,000
  • 4–6 zones (in-ceiling speakers, Sonos Amps): ₦1,200,000 – ₦3,000,000
  • 8+ zones (premium in-ceiling, centralised amp, outdoor): ₦3,500,000 – ₦8,000,000+
  • Full integration with home automation / Crestron: Custom pricing

Why Professional Installation Matters

Speaker placement, amplifier sizing, acoustic calibration, and network configuration all affect sound quality. A poorly placed ceiling speaker can sound hollow; a correctly positioned one fills the room naturally.

At Bullaugen Technology, we handle everything: acoustic planning, speaker specification, professional installation, and system calibration. We use tools to ensure even coverage and consistent volume across every zone. The result is sound that feels natural and effortless.
